What to Think About When Downsizing
You’ve heard of “downsizing”: the process of consolidating your belongings and moving them to a smaller space. Many families and individuals have found benefit in downsizing, for various reasons! Wondering if those reasons could apply to you? Here are some reasons for, perks of, and notes on downsizing for your consideration!
Why You Want to Downsize
You have too much space: too much room to clean, to organize, decorate, maintain, power… You may feel that you need to purge and simplify your belongings, or you may have children moving out of the house, or you have just found that the space you thought you needed just isn’t used like you expected it would. Regardless, downsizing to a smaller home can not only reduce that feeling of wasted or unnecessary space, it can also save you a significant amount of money! So, whether it’s a feeling of surplus space or a need to spend less on your living expenses, downsizing may be a beneficial move for you.
The Perks of Downsizing
Not only are smaller homes (i.e. less-square-footage-homes) cheaper in general, they also require less energy to power, cool, provide water for, and more. Why not put that money saved on energy bills towards more important things than empty, unused space? In addition, the work for upkeeping a smaller home is substantially less than for large homes, both interior and exterior! A larger home will tend to have more pest issues because there’s more space for them to occupy. This means more work preventing pests, or more money spent on pest control services.
Downsize Before Moving
If you haven’t already gone through your belongings and “minimized”, do so before moving. This seems like an obvious step, but many people may overestimate the available space in a new home, or assume that there will be a spot to store many of the things you want to keep, only to find that there is none! Take careful inventory of what you intend to hold onto, and determine the amount of storage (out of sight) that you require. That should be a priority for your smaller home! Furthermore, consider what your home may need to handle in the future: visitors, home office needs, amenities, even personal space should be kept in mind as you look for smaller homes that still meet your needs!
