Warm, dry weather may help arthritis for some people, but not others, so try to spend some time where you’re thinking about moving to before fully committing.

Chances are you won’t need as much space as you used to in retirement. Downsizing means you’re more likely to end up with a space that is more appropriate for this time of your life. A big home is harder to keep clean. It also takes more work to maintain and tends to be more expensive. By comparison, smaller homes that are thoughtfully designed can be comfortable without feeling cramped and may be more retirement-friendly from a maintenance and expense standpoint.

Speaking of expenses, with the cost of living going up, moving to a place where the cost of living is more affordable may be especially beneficial to retirees. Think about housing costs, quality of life, taxes, and healthcare costs–as well as the weather–when deciding what state you want to live in throughout your retirement. Remember, what makes sense for you may not be the same as what makes sense for someone else–that’s okay!
Once you retire, you don’t have to feel like you’re stuck where you’re living now because you’re tied to a job. You can move wherever you feel like it.
